What I'd Do If I Could Do Anything
~ a musical confession ~
Most of my days are bookended by music now.
But not mixing. Not singing. Not slowly wrapping my head around production.
Those all happen, but sprinkled throughout the week as time and energy allows.
Instead, my days have gravitated towards beginning and ending with the slow, quiet, persistent work of digging for songs that align with the sound I’m building.
Which is a delightful callback to how I once spent my after school hours—if I wasn’t playing hockey or Call of Duty 4—downloading everything I could think to download from Limewire, praying I didn’t brick the family desktop computer in the process.
But instead of burning CDs and stuffing my iPod, now I’m building and testing set ideas.
There’s more presence now. More intention. More coherence. An underlying plan.
I have nine sets in the works. Each is clearly and uniquely themed, and all fit my sonic world like a velvet glove. Three are nearing completion, which will be the first I share.
Archangel.
Chaos Goddess.
Subterranean Soul.
Soon.
The rest will come in their own time.
This Siren Jinx project has been an interesting one to move through. For the first time in my life, the sheer joy and delight and pleasure of doing the thing is all I want.
Everything that follows is simply a cup of maraschino cherries to snack on.
And incredibly, young as the project is, I’ve been receiving recognition from artists in drips and drabs. Likes. Comments. Reposts. Not enough to really mean anything—it’s too soon for that. But enough to signal that what I’m doing is being seen and felt.
That’s enough for me.
I’m not trying to become famous. I don’t need the project to earn money.
I just love how expressing myself through music feels, and sharing songs I love.
I want to steep in that love.
Forever.
Music is what I’d do if I could do anything.
And I can do anything.
Especially this.
With love from the forest,
~ Alexander
