Pukey Yuki’s Favourite Month

~ a cat’s eye view of impermanence ~

August is Yuki’s favourite month, but she wouldn’t know that.

Not because of the warm days and cool nights.

Not because she can prowl the garden all day without being rained on.

Yuki loves August because it's the only month where once dusk hits, the air begins to fill with termites (which if you’re unfamiliar, are basically winged ants).

For a cat who would happily bite off more than she can chew in antagonizing other creatures if I let her roam free, a bunch of dumb, slow, flying bugs is her heaven.

When I see her joy and think of what might be going through her head, I smile.

She doesn’t know when August arrives, that it lasts 31 days, or is now over.

She doesn’t know why the termites only appear at this time of year.

Even if she did understand, I don’t think she’d care. She’d be too busy soaring through the air to grasp one between two paws, before landing to chow down.

Sometimes she’s too successful and eats too many. Their exoskeletons can be difficult to digest, which occasionally means I have three piles of puke to clean up.

(For whatever reason whenever Yuki becomes Pukey Yuki, she makes three piles.)

Then as suddenly as they arrive, they’re gone.

I’m not just talking about my cat’s love of hunting termites anymore.

Life is a braid of inevitable change that happens slowly and fastly all at once.

Some change we weave ourselves, by decision or omission.

Some change happens to us, often to our surprise.

That’s the chaos of life.

Best not to resist.

With love from the cabin,
