Tonics at the Beach

~ salt-soaked remedies for the soul ~

There’s a beach near my home where few seem to roam.

Perhaps because this beach consists of rocks that are perfectly impossible to walk on, sloped and loose sand that also makes for difficult walking, and logs (which are the swiftest mode of transportation, but you never know when one will be unstable).

So, this beach is not great. At least as far as its composition goes.

But the views, goddamn.

Before you, a vast swathe of ocean blue ensconced by the east coast of Vancouver Island to your back, and the west coast of the British Colombian mainland visible across the Georgia Strait. Gazing deeper into the mainland, towering behind the shore lies the Coast Mountain Range. Such beautiful snow-capped rock monsters.

We’re talking about the kind of view you’d see on a postcard. I’ve been visiting this spot consistently-but-infrequently for over a decade now. To unwind, to inhale the soothing sea air, to find sticks and stones for the garden, to have a soda, to ponder.

This stony beach in Kitty Coleman Provincial park, accessible by Davey Janes Road (true story), is a shapeshifter, a purveyor of different tonics for different needs.

Whenever I come here I’m reminded of the regal beauty of this part of the world.

That too, is a tonic. One which I dedicate this Whimsie too.

With love from the forest,

~ Alexander

P.S. Sometimes I go to stack rocks:
