Where Ideas Come From

~ the origins of original music ~

Hi.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what my first original song might be.

I’ve contrived a lot of ideas that I liked (still do), carefully bookmarked for later.

Wait. Hang on a sec.

I don’t come up with ideas any more.

Instead I wait.

I cook. I clean. I shower. I read.

I walk. I lift. I yoga. I breathwork.

I connect. I tend. I adventure. I rave.

I roll joints under the stars and share my desires with the moon.

I gleefully turn the world inside-out with mushrooms in search of treasure.

All the while, I’m waiting patiently, listening for the deepest reverberations.

This is where my ideas come from now.

There’s no forcing, reaching, or grasping.

Only the quiet trust that the best ideas will emerge of their own accord.

Those are the only ones I want.

When I hear them whisper, I know they’re what I’ve been waiting for.

I breathe with them for a moment… and then I move.

Which is how my first two original songs were conceived last weekend.

I randomly thought of a speech I love, and how cool stitching some of my favourite lines into a cavernous world of bass, colour, and controlled chaos would be.

Splendid.

Choosing to surf that wave of thought, a TV character I love came to mind, and how some of her lines would also be perfect for building a gritty sonic world around.

Delightful.

What happened next began as a quick hunt for the vocal samples, and turned into a five hour songwriting session that stretched until 3 am, resulting in the song equivalent of the shitty first draft of a piece of writing. A loose structure and general idea, with lots of refinement to come… plus whatever ideas each iteration turns up.

Euphoric.

Now that my first songs have arrived, the ideas behind them are so obvious.

As if I should have known all along.

Thaaaat’s the secret little tell of something arriving in your life exactly on time.

When what arrives feels like it's been there all along, just waiting for you to open your eyes and become aware of the gem in front of you. That’s where the magic happens.

That’s where the most real, raw, and honest art lives.

As always, I have no timeline for when this delightful pair will be ready. Like ideas, music arrives when it arrives, very much on its own time. But originals are coming!

Before then, I imagine, more long-form mixes and remixes will land.

The music really is just beginning.
